As mentioned in my post “Playing Golf with Koreans” it is not unusual for friends to bring and share gifts, drinks, and snacks at a golf outing. Every child knows that getting gifts is wonderful. Nearly every culture recognizes giving gifts as an important aspect of developing and maintaining positive relationships. Let’s save the analysis and discussion of commercialism and capitalism for a different post. Go read about the five “love languages” if you instinctually can’t grasp how and why it is important. This is particularly true with Koreans.

OKAY! You have seen your Korean friends do this, and now you would like to bring something, but you need some advice.

Note: this is a list of small tokens of appreciation and friendship – not necessarily appropriate for special occasions (like your father-in-law’s birthday) or business gift giving for an important client.

Here are some suggestions you can order from Amazon quick and easy:

GIFTS

Hats and Shirts. Koreans will almost always wear a hat when playing golf. Vented hats in summer, and winter hats with fur and/or ear covers are great gifts!

Balls. Although there are many excellent premium golf balls, stick to Titleist ProVs (maybe TaylorMade TP5s or Callaway ChromeTours – but steer clear of econoballs). A sleeve of balls is great. A box is even greater. A box of personalized premium balls is fantabulous!

Premium Golf Tees. Especially in winter, when the tee box freezes, the tripod tees are a thoughtful and super useful gift that will not break the bank.

UV Sleeves. Many Koreans will use cooling UV sun protection sleeves. A nice gift in the summer.

Tumblers.

Ginseng and Energy Packs.

Electrolyte mixes. To stay hydrated.

Flasks.

Ball Cleaners and Towels and Tools.

Cigars. Cases. Cutters. Turbo Lighters

SNACKS & DRINKS

Ideally have an insulated cooler bag that will fit in the golf cart basket.

In summer, throw some bottled water into the freezer the night before. When you load up your cooler bag with makoli, brews, or energy drinks, the frozen water bottles keep everything cool.

While you will not likely do a Mukbang on the course, if you are bringing drinks, then tossing in some jerky, nuts, bananas, protein bars – even sandwiches or kimbab is cool!

I have a friend who always has gum on hand as well! After a round of golf, some freshened breath is nice – especially if car pooling to and from the course.
